Folly Beach History
We are very excited about the future of our
Folly Beach history
section. We will delve back into the 1600's and provide primary
source information that covers topics such as shipwrecks and buried
treasure that date back between 1696-1861. Until the Civil War, the
island was not very well known - our island was a remote place with
a plantation of slaves - but as our young country entered into
the early years of the Civil War, Folly Island became a vast Civil
War camp ground for the Union forces to use as a base to take the
"cradle of secession". Stay tuned for a lot of hard to
find historical information about Folly Beach.
Nature / Wildlife
Geological forces such as northeastern storms, rising sea level
and violent hurricanes appear to be eroding our island as time
marches on. This section will cover topics that include our indigenous
forms of life that are natural to our island such as dolphins,
sharks, birds, turtles, seashells, turtles, dunes and plant life.
