Bicycling

Bicycling is a fun and healthy way to see the island of Folly Beach.  At six and a half miles long, you can get anywhere on the island at your own pace, in a reasonable amount of time.  You'll especially enjoy the sun and fresh ocean air while biking around Folly Beach County Park and the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier.  There's little opportunity for hard core mountain biking since the island is flat and it's illegal to even walk on the sand dunes.  Beach bike rentals offer bikes called beach cruisers with wide tires and 3 gears ideal for leisurely biking on Folly Beach sandy terrain.

Fishing

You can do all kinds of different surf fishing from the beach, pier fishing from the big Folly Beach pier that extends 1,045 feet into the Atlantic, or go on a chartered fishing trip.  At the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier, you can make use of fishing equipment rentals, use the shelters, or enter fishing contests.  Folly River Landing (right after the bridge to Folly Island) offers a free public boat ramp into the Folly River.  Bait and tackle is available at the fishing pier or Crosby's Fish Market.  A pier-only fishing license is available at the pier.  All other (boat, shore, ocean, river) fishing licenses are available at Wal-Mart, just up Folly Road in James Island.

Hiking

Because it's a small barrier island, dry land hiking on Folly Beach is pretty low keyed.  The ground is flat and sandy.  A favorite hiking destination is the northeast tip of the island where you can see the Morris Island Lighthouse.  A paved path leads to an opening of sand and beach.  Most other hiking on Folly is done in the form of walking up or down the beach, which stretches the entire 6 and a half mile Atlantic coast of the island.  If you want to walk the beach from the Folly Island County Park at one end all the way to the other tip where you can see the lighthouse, there will be some breakers, rocks and other obstacles to climb over or hike around.

If you want more hardcore hiking and are willing to get wet, you have to check out some of the awesome kayak camping trips.  You can spend days exploring the wet lands on a kayak and camp out on tiny untouched islands.

Jet Skis

Jet ski rentals are so much fun.  During the warmer months, you can rent a jet ski by the hour or half hour.  There are three places to rent jet skis, at the Holiday Inn or at one of two stands on the beach to the East and to the West of the Holiday Inn.

Kayaking

See the native birds, dolphins, marsh tributaries, estuary behind Folly Beach, deserted islands, and the lighthouse, from exhilarating or peaceful kayak trips.  Go on guided kayak tours, learn from an ACA instructor, or paddle around on your own.  The Washout, from 6th to 10th street, is a surfer hang out with a wide open sandy beach great for beginners.  Another good spot with a nice break is just south of the pier, in front of the Holiday Inn.  Remember to keep 200 feet away from the pier to avoid a $200 fine.  See below for kayak rentals and other water equipment rentals.  Also, check out the calendar of events for kayak and canoe festivals in James Island and Folly Beach.

Swimming

Beaches stretch all the way down the Atlantic side of Folly Island, and swimming is allowed on all beaches.  Lifeguards are on duty during the summer at the family friendly Folly Beach County Park.  Public conveniences at the Folly County Park include restrooms, picnic areas, showers, boardwalks, rental equipment and everything you would expect to find at a public beach.  If you are drawn to exciting, crowded beaches, check out the Center Street Beach, right in front of the Holiday Inn.  The beach is easy to get to.  Go down Center Street until it ends at the Holiday Inn.  Turn right or left.  There are small boardwalk entrances to the beach with parking every block or so.  If you're looking for an exciting treat for kids, go to the Splash Zone Water Park nearby on James Island.
