Shortboards
Shortboard surfboards are designed for
advanced surfers with high performance in mind. These boards are
usually 5’ 5” and 7’ long with a width of 16” to 19”. Shortboards
usually have 3 fins: 1 large fin in the middle and 2 smaller fins
towards the rails, although twin-fins and Quad fins are also
popular. This design allows experienced surfers the ability to
quickly change direction and perform advanced maneuvers.

The basic shortboard is a custom shape for maximum performance in
any surfing conditions. The main design focus of the shortboard is
to blend a combination of variables to generate power, speed and
control. These boards are usually made specific to each individual
surfer’s specifications. Shortboards are also referred to as a
Thruster or a performance board. Fishes are shortboards with wider
noses. Due to its small shape and narrow outline, shortboards are
less stable and more difficult to paddle than longer boards.
There are 3 basic types of
shortboards:
- Standard Shortboard – this board
is a good all around board designed for everyday surfing.
Features standard volume & rocker.
- High Performance Shortboard –
this board is designed for extreme maneuvers. Features less
volume, more rocker in tail.
- Small Wave Shortboard – this
board is designed for performance surfing in small wave
conditions. More volume, less rocker.
Due to their small shape and narrow
outline, shortboards are more unstable and more difficult to paddle
for novice surfers. Shortboards provide high performance and offer
increased maneuverability. Shortboard surfboards are designed and
built to push the surfer’s level of performance.
